DOCUMENTATION FOR TRAVEL
Each passenger will of course need a passport, but you will also need to carry a current driving licence, insurance note with comprehensive cover in place for the countries you're going to visit. (Some insurers have been known to restrict comprehensive cover to the country of registration so check if you're not sure.) You should also carry a Vehicle Registration Certificate and any other breakdown, accident, travel or health Insurance documents that you might need. You should know the location of the permitted weights panel on your van. You should also carry a European Health Insurance Card. (www.ehic.ie for all the details if you need to apply.) If you are towing a trailer it must have its own registration and insurance. Recent reports suggest that Portugal is the most difficult in this regard. For travelers planning motorway use in Switzerland and Austria a carnet is required. In Austria motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes require a 'go-box' to be fitted which is available at border stations.
